Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane, Michael Bradley out of MLS All-Stars vs. Tottenham

Los Angeles Galaxy duo Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane, as well as Toronto FC's Michael Bradley, will miss the MLS All-Stars match against Tottenham Hotspur through injury. Coach Pablo Mastroeni will have to do without three significant players, all of whom were likely to start, when Spurs visit Denver on Wednesday night, reported James Andrew of the MailOnline. This disappointment adds to the absence of New York City FC's Frank Lampard and New England Revolution's Chris Tierney. However, Mastroeni's squad now welcomes two of Galaxy's most exciting players in Juninho and Gyasi Zardes. The Denver crowd will also get to see local favourite Sam Cronin of the Colorado Rapids in action, while Columbus Crew pair Ethan Finlay and Waylon Francis have also been added to the squad. Spurs' visit would have been a familiar challenge for Gerrard, Keane and Lampard, three former Premier League stars who are well-versed with facing one of England's toughest sides. Keane enjoyed two hugely successful spells with the club, and having found a new lease of life since moving to the United States, he would have offered the All-Stars' most prominent threat. Although Gerrard and Lampard are still settling after their recent transfers, their experience could have been key. There's the age-old ...

Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard Named in 2015 MLS All-Star Team to Face Tottenham

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur will face familiar opponents in Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard when the club travels to Colorado for the 2015 Major League Soccer All-Star game on July 29. Despite neither having played a competitive match in the division, MLS Commissioner Don Garber has included both Englishmen in the lineup, reported ESPN FC. While Lampard was meant to compete in New York City FC's recent 4-4 draw with Toronto FC, he remained absent with a calf problem, per the aforementioned report. He spent the 2014-15 Premier League season on loan at NYCFC's sister-club Manchester City, who finished runners-up to Lampard's former side Chelsea. Gerrard has only just made the switch to Los Angeles Galaxy after spending 17 years in the Liverpool first team. The Reds' former captain recently took part in a friendly match for the American side, having helped Liverpool to sixth in the Premier League earlier this year. Dirty Tackle's Brooks Peck commented on the strange situation, while Men in Blazers highlighted another European legend who could have been included: As reported by MLSsoccer.com, supporters of the division have voted for plenty of new and high-profile names to take part against Spurs: Incidentally, Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins is included after winning the "More ...

Cristiano Ronaldo Reportedly Targeting MLS Move to Los Angeles

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to head to Los Angeles once his Real Madrid contract expires in 2018, according to Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated.Wahl first reported Ronaldo's alleged interest in a switch to Major League Soccer during March. He has revealed extra information, writing, "Ronaldo has now decided the city where he wants to be: Los Angeles."Two teams are likely to be situated in the City of Angels by the time CR7's Bernabeu contract comes to an end, detailed by Wahl:It could be the Galaxy or LAFC, and while talks have yet to take place between Ronaldo and any MLS teams, L.A. is Ronaldo’s preferred destination. Meanwhile, I’m told it’s looking more likely every day that LAFC won’t start play until 2018. That means we could see Ronaldo debut for a new team in a new stadium that year.So-called "franchise players" have become commonplace for MLS' biggest teams, and indeed, those just entering the league structure.New York City FC and Orlando City are currently working through their debut seasons with David Villa and Kaka taking the headlines at the respective clubs. Both players are legends of the European game and have the power to pull in a larger global audience.Los Angeles ...

Sky Sports Lands MLS Broadcast Rights: Reaction from David Beckham and More

Sky Sports has announced an exclusive four-year deal to show MLS matches in the United Kingdom, starting with the arrival of the new season in March. "Football in the U.S. and Canada has enormous potential for growth and we can't wait to bring this competition to our viewers for the first time," said Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis in the organisation's announcement article. Viewers will be able to witness Premier League legends Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard taking their first steps into the American soccer arena with New York City FC and Los Angeles Galaxy respectively. Currently representing Manchester City and Liverpool respectively, both will make the journey stateside at the conclusion of the current English season. Although it seemed Lampard would represent NYCFC during the last campaign, his decision to join the side's Manchester-based sister club put these plans on hold. He finally signed a two-year deal with the Big Apple team in January after having been reported to have committed in the previous summer, per Jack Lang and Liam Corless of the Mirror. Gerrard will join LA Galaxy when his Liverpool contract expires in the summer, calling an end to a career-long association with the Anfield club. Both stars follow in the ...

Thierry Henry Reportedly Set to Leave New York Red Bulls

Thierry Henry is being tipped to leave the New York Red Bulls at the end of 2014 but could look beyond the lure of retirement if his MLS exit is confirmed. Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated provided information that suggests Henry is coming toward the end of his four-year spell with the NY-based club: Red Bull soccer boss Gerard Houllier hinted at things over the summer when he said that he didn't think Henry would extend with New York, and a source with knowledge of Red Bull’s plans now tells SI.com there is "zero chance" that Henry will sign an extension. (That doesn’t necessarily mean that Henry will retire, however.) Wahl also indicates that Red Bull's willingness to be involved in the club is beginning to disappear due to the dwindling global profits of the team. "Don't look for Red Bull to be involved in MLS in the long-term future," Wahl writes, per SI. Franco Panizo, writer for MLSsoccer.com, tweeted a statement from Red Bull in response to Wahl's report: Henry's exit would likely halt the interest of many onlookers and could see the side's profits deplete. His shirt sales in MLS were second only to David Beckham in 2012, and he remains a major ...

David Beckham Scores Directly from Corner for LA Galaxy

David Beckham has had an interesting few weeks.Left out of Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad for the 2012 London Olympics, the former England captain played a huge role in the stunning festivities of the opening ceremony.Speeding up the River Thames, Becks delivered the torch to Sir Steve Redgrave, and the rest is history. On Thursday night, Beckham delivered again. He provided two assists and a goal in the CONCACAF Champions League against an Isidro Metapan side that couldn't contain his passing brilliance. The team from El Salvador gave it a good go, but fell 5-2 to the MLS outfit.Just before halftime, Beckham stepped up to take a routine corner. Swinging the ball near to the front post, the closest defender and keeper were caught off guard. Eventually, the ball was fumbled in for a rather strange goal.A tad fortuitous for the Manchester United legend, but remarkable nonetheless.Such a strike has been reminiscent of Beckham's recent form, where he's contributed five assists and six goals to L.A. Galaxy's difficult season. His performances continue to question whether Pearce was correct to leave him out of the Team GB's squad.Ryan Giggs only started two of four fixtures at the tournament. Beckham's current fitness would have afforded him ...
