Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Rating the Galaxy Players

This will be the first of two matches in which I just provide numbers and a summary of my thoughts on the players donning the Punjab third kit strip of the Los Angeles Galaxy. There may be more if the Galaxy schedule some end-of-season friendlies. All in all, I think this was a very gutsy performance by Bruce Arena's Galaxy. Believe it or not, they were just as capable of winning this match as Andre Villas-Boas's Tottenham Hotspur were, as both teams were inept with their finishing. But leave it to David Junior Lopes to make Tottenham look like an MLS side tonight. When you don't clear a set piece properly in the 28th minute, and let a similarly unheralded player in Hector Jimenez single out Lopes for his first-ever Galaxy goal, it makes you wonder, are Tottenham really going to take the Premier League this season? I mean, they didn't run over Stevenage in their first preseason game (they only won 2-0), and it wasn't a completely awful display (see Gareth Bale). But when you take on the best teams in the world, you tend to play your best game. The Galaxy didn't have David Beckham. The Galaxy didn't have Landon ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Tottenham Hotspur: 6 Things We Learned

Tuesday was a great night for football, but a poor night for finishing as Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy took on Andre Villas-Boas's Tottenham before a crowd of over 25,000 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. A gutsy performance for Los Angeles, but a disappointing outing for Tottenham, who had this game in hand on paper.Spurs continue their preseason on July 28 against Liverpool in Baltimore, while the Galaxy continue their 2012 MLS season this weekend against FC Dallas. Here are six things we learned in this friendly match between the Galaxy and Spurs.Begin Slideshow

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Chivas USA: Rating David Beckham’s Performance

David Beckham had another of those "par for the course" performances on Saturday in the Los Angeles Galaxy's 3-1 win over Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. His contributions to the match: two assists and a yellow card. Yep. Par for the course indeed. But that's David Beckham for you. As a provider, he is one of the best in Major League Soccer. When he is combined with Juninho and Marcelo Sarvas, the chemistry these three have makes for a competent midfield. When Mike Magee gets healthy and returns to action, it's going to make Beckham's job a little bit easier. But let's go back to his two assists. In the 14th minute, Beckham had space from 25 yards out to find a streaking Robbie Keane, who was onsides in opening the match, 1-0. It was Juninho who set him up on that successful sequence. Then, in the 48th minute of play, the three kings of L.A. teamed up. David Beckham sent a through ball to Keane, who sent another one to a streaking Landon Donovan. It was virtually the same play and the same sequence, at least in terms of the run towards the finish. ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Chivas USA: Rating the Galaxy Players

Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy saw its three designated players go to work once again on Saturday. Those three designated players are, of course, Landon Donovan, David Beckham and Robbie Keane. All three were instrumental in delivering three goals and three points to the Galaxy in their 3-1 victory over Robin Fraser's Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Ah, the power of threes. Yes, I can personally confirm to you that good things do come in threes. But what about the rest of the team that was on the pitch? How did they do? Well, the rest of the supporting cast weren't too bad themselves, but they could have done a little bit better to acquit themselves in these Galaxy player ratings.  Josh Saunders: 7 I am giving Josh Saunders the benefit of the doubt because he did make five saves on the night, but he could have had at least one more. However, in his defense, the back line didn't help him out on the Paolo Cardozo goal in the 52nd minute of play. Aside from that hiccup, Saunders put on a workmanlike performance and will look to do more of the same against FC ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Chivas USA: 10 Bold Predictions

Before the Los Angeles Galaxy get run over by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur next week at the Home Depot Center, there is the matter of a match that is more important, and less difficult.Note that I say this because Chivas USA are no Spurs. But you wouldn't think of that as the case in the last meeting between the Goats and the G's, in which the designated home side (that is, Chivas) outplayed LA and made the Galaxy look like the Blues, who are no Spurs, either. Heck, they aren't even close to the caliber of the Tottenham youth team! How about that! The Galaxy cannot overlook Chivas USA. With a record of 6-7-5 (23 points), the Goats currently have three games in hand over their cross-locker rivals, while Los Angeles are barely hanging on to the fifth spot at 8-10-3 (27 points).A loss here from Los Angeles, and it can be said that this is indeed a down year for the Galaxy, if it isn't already. They can salvage matters on Saturday and turn this into a warm-up for the dog-and-pony show to follow. Here are 10 bold predictions for the second leg of the 2012 Honda SuperClasico.Begin Slideshow

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Vancouver Whitecaps: Rating David Beckham’s Performance

It was a tale of two stretches of time for the Los Angeles Galaxy's David Beckham. During the first 80 minutes, Beckham played like he deserved to be playing for the Los Angeles Blues. Absolutely stupefying play. No intensity, and the set piece slot machine was in one-arm bandit mode. And then, in the 81st minute, Beckham was able to fire a close laser on a Landon Donovan delivery to make it 2-1. Game on, says the England international, still feeling the aftereffects of the Team Great Britain pipe dream that tormented him like a thief in the night. Los Angeles were due for a late-night mugging of some sorts, and it was Beckham who found a player of the future in Jose Villareal. Beckham delivered a long ball to Juninho, who then fed the ball to Villareal to complete the rally. The game-tying assist salvaged a point for Bruce Arena's Galaxy and kept their unbeaten streak against Martin Rennie's Vancouver Whitecaps alive. At least, until the next match. But when it's a tale of two stretches of time—one big, the other small—it's not going to equate to a good player rating. For a designated player of David Beckham's caliber, ...

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Vancouver Whitecaps: Rating the Galaxy Players

It looked to be a one-sided contest for Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy as they took on Martin Rennie's Vancouver Whitecaps at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. After 80 minutes had passed, a miraculous rally combined with some clutch defending late in the game  preserved a 2-2 draw for LA on the road. In any draw, there will be good ratings, and there will be bad ratings. Here are my player ratings for the Los Angeles Galaxy players who took to the pitch on Wednesday night.  Josh Saunders 5 Made four saves but could have been better off making just a few more in the first half. Average night for Saunders, only because it ended up as a draw.  Sean Franklin 4 Was part of a backline that had a horrid first half of football. He is not responsible for the mistakes that led to Vancouver's goals, but I am tarring him with the same brush. A few strokes, and...done.  A.J. DeLaGarza 3 Culpable after failing to turn aside the Barry Robson goal in the 27th minute of play. A rare act of inconsistency from DeLaGarza. Question is, will this be a habit?  Todd Dunivant 3 Couldn't play the entire match ...
