Del Piero and Raul: Who’d Be Better for MLS and Why

As has become a pattern in the MLS, famous European players eventually decide that instead of trying to sit on a bench one more season with their current team, they'd rather finish their careers in America. And now the headlines are slowly linking two more stalwarts of Champions League soccer to teams in the burgeoning American league. They are Alessandro Del Piero of Italy and Spain's Raul. Both are synonymous with success.Del Piero has had a lifetime relationship with Juventus, experiencing the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.Raul was thought to be forever clad in the famous white of Real Madrid, only to be unceremoniously dumped when the second round of the Galaticos arrived. In each case, MLS would be still be getting a very serviceable player, capable of scoring many goals and creating general mayhem for opposing defenses. But which one would make the better addition for MLS? Let's try to figure this out.Begin Slideshow

Landon Donovan vs. David Beckham: Who Has Achieved More for MLS?

David Beckham and Landon Donovan. They are, without a doubt, two of the most high profile stars to ever play in MLS.Both are skilled and can exhilarate fans in a way that very few other players in the league can. That they're on the same team, the L.A. Galaxy, would seem to be guaranteed powerhouse. And while they have achieved many wins, the Galaxy have managed to win only one trophy (last year's MLS title).Certainly the relationship between Beckham and Donovan has had its fair share of bumps. The two had a very public spat when Donovan accused Beckham of being a bad teammate in Grant Wahl's book, The Beckham Experiment.Yet the two stars seem to have found a way to coexist.Which has done more for the league though? It's an interesting debate. Let's explore.Begin Slideshow

Top 10 Best Signings in MLS History

Though a comparatively young league, Major League Soccer has experienced its fair share of boom and bust signings.Every season, teams roll the dice on big-money pickups (ahem, L.A. Galaxy and New York Red Bulls), while others shop for bargains.Yet since the league's inaugural season in 1996, a few signings have truly been great for their respective teams. Here's a list of some of the best. Apologies if your favorite didn't make the list, but keep in mind I tried to quantify "best signings" as cost versus league value. In other words, Becks and Henry won't be found here (Becks was a lot of money for one title and the jury is still out on the prolific Henry).Begin Slideshow

MLS 2012: New England Revolution Season Introduction

The New England Revolution ended its 2011 season in the same forgettable manner that had preceded all year long. A disappointing 2-2 draw against Toronto ended a dismal campaign that saw the Revs finish dead last. Worse still, longtime coach Steve Nicol left the team after being a fixture on the New England sideline for a decade. With the 2012 season now two games in, little seems to have changed. Still, a bottoming-out last season was undoubtedly a sobering experience. The silver lining to such a disaster is the change it caused, and Revs fans are hoping that starts to reflect in the results.Begin Slideshow
