MLS Club Houston Dynamo Help Promote UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III

On Thursday afternoon, Major League Soccer Club Houston Dynamo and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) met inside the cage for the first time.Hopefully, this isn't the only time that a MLS Club and the UFC collaborate in promoting a each other's respective sport. As a fan of both sports, I remember when the MLS and UFC were in danger of becoming extinct. Now, I'm amazed and proud on how both organizations were able to weather the storm only to persevere over time. With the growth and universal acceptance of both sports, fans will have the opportunity to watch plenty of action for many years to come. With UFC 136: Edgar vs Maynard III taking place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Houston Dynamo players Bobby Boswell, Geoff Cameron and Corey Ashe were on hand to help promote the upcoming UFC event. The trio had the opportunity to meet current UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo and his Saturday night opponent, Kenny Florian. In a display of mutual respect and good sportsmanship, both fighters met inside the cage for kick-up contest judged by the Dynamo Players. Both fighters had no trouble in showing off the juggling skills which they honed over the years of playing soccer. Kenny Florian, who is ...

New York Red Bulls Stampede over the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2-0 Win

Harrison, NJ—With their playoff destiny in their hands, the New York Red Bulls took advantage of the absence of Los Angeles Galaxy players Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane as they stampeded the Galaxy in a 2-0 victory at Red Bull Arena.By earning three crucial points, the Red Bulls leapfrogged over the Houston Dynamo for the third MLS Cup Playoffs Wild Card spot. Despite both teams having the same amount of points, the Red Bulls hold the advantage due having scored more goals. By improving to 9-7-16, the Red Bulls have an outside chance of repeating as regular season Eastern Conference champions, as they're two points removed current Eastern Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City. With two matches against Eastern Conference foes Sporting KC and Philadelphia Union, the Red Bulls can remain regular season conference winners if they win both contests, while both the Columbus Crew and the Union lose their final matches. Needing to demonstrate that they are capable of competing against a team of the caliber of the Galaxy, the Red Bulls as they registered a 14-13 advantage on shots, 6-5 advantage on shots on goals, and a 9-8 advantage on corner kicks. After being called for 10 fouls in the first half, the ...

New York Red Bulls Stumble at Home to Real Salt Lake in 3-1 Loss

Harrison, NJ - Real Salt Lake (15-7-6, 51 points) needed only 21 minutes to produce three goals while literally sapping the energy from the New York Red Bulls (7-7-15, 36 points) and home team supporters, the South Ward in their 3-1 road victory at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night. Needing to win their final matches in the regular season, the Red Bulls came out on all cylinders and attempted to attack the net. Unfortunately for the home team, it wasn't enough as Real Salt Lake demonstrated why they're indeed one of the best teams in MLS as they weathered the early Red Bulls onslaught. In the seventh minute of the match, Real Salt Lake took a 1-0 lead when Alvaro Saborio scored his ninth goal of the season when he accepted Andy Williams' corner kick to head the ball past Red Bulls GK Frank Rost. Four minutes later, Salt Lake took a 2-0 lead when Fabian Espindola intercepted Tim Ream's pass in the penalty area and shaked and baked his way around Frank Rost so he could score his eighth goal of the season at the eleventh minute. With Real Salt Lake leading 2-0, the Red Bulls weren't able to recover and make ...

New York Red Bulls Win Their First Match Since July in 1-0 Win over FC Dallas

Desperate for a win and fighting for a playoff spot, the New York Red Bulls (7-6-15, 36 points) won their first match since July 6 with a 1-0 road win over FC Dallas (13-9-7, 46 points) at Pizza Hut Park.Playing without four of their players, Luke Rogers game-winner came in the 36th minute of the first-half when he accepted a pass from Juan Agudelo and managed to beat Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. With the absence of the injured Thierry Henry and Roy Miller, the Red Bulls also had to overcome the one-game suspensions of Rafa Marquez and Jan Gunnar Solli. As a team, the Red Bulls played some inspired defense and goalkeeper Frank Rost recorded his second shutout of the season as he registered three saves. As a result, Dallas appeared out of sync lost for the second consecutive week to an Eastern Conference foe.On Saturday night, the Red Bulls played the first of their final seven games with a 1-4-9 road record. Being in a position where they cannot afford to lose or tie, the Red Bulls took advantage of a slumping FC Dallas team and managed to pick up their second road win of the season. As a result of ...

New York Red Bulls: Fans Are Voicing Their Displeasure of the Team’s Performance

With seven games remaining in the 2011 MLS season, the New York Red Bulls are in danger of missing the playoffs. As a result of Saturday night's 1-1 tie against the worst team in MLS, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4-13-10, 22 points), the Red Bulls (6-6-15, 33 points) are now in sixth place of the Eastern Conference. In addition, they've lost the final MLS playoff spot to rival D.C. United. One thing that was noticeable on Saturday night was the "Go Backe Home" banner. While many Red Bulls fans haven't been pleased with the team's underachieving performance, Saturday night's banner was the second time this season fans have protested against the Red Bulls organization. The first time fans protested the organization was on Saturday, July 23, 2011, when the South Ward remained silent for the first half of the Red Bulls match against FC Dallas. It was mainly centered around the Red Bulls decisions regarding the team's recent United States Open Cup match against the Chicago Fire.As long as the protesting is conducted in a nonviolent manner, I seeing nothing wrong with what the supporters are doing. Understanding the time, money and personal love that supporters clubs invest, they have a ...

New York Red Bulls Tie the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 at Red Bull Arena

Harrison, NJ - On the evening before the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, both the New York Red Bulls organization and the 19,684 in attendance took a moment of silence to honor the families & victims of the 9/11 attacks. With the Red Bulls players wearing their 9/11 Memorial armband and the fans demonstrating their patriotism as they waved their United States flags, it was impossible to ignore the heavy atmosphere at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night. While the memories of Sept. 11 were in the minds of many in attendance, the South Ward did a marvelous job in keeping everyone's spirits up with their chanting and enthusiasm.Unfortunately for the South Ward, and every Red Bulls fan in attendance, they had to settle for another tie. Playing against the worst team in Major League Soccer, the Red Bulls needed a Juan Agudelo goal in 68th minute of the match in order to tie the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-1 at home. For a team who are more than likely to miss the postseason, the Vancouver Whitecaps (4-13-10) entered Red Bull Arena as if they're the team fighting for a playoff spot. From the very beginning, the Whitecaps demonstrated that they're playing their ...

San Antonio Scorpions FC: Building a Team the Community Wants

The November 2010 Issue of the soccer magazine FourFourTwo, which featured Pelé on the cover, had an interesting article titled the The Fall and Rise of Chester FC. Thanks to the club's supporters, the now-supporter-owned team was able to successfully relaunch in 2010. The one section I will always remember about the Chester FC article is the small section titled How to Relaunch a Football Club in Five Easy Steps. The section can be applied to any ownership group who wishes to launch a professional soccer club in North America. The five steps were: (1) Get the Media Onside, (2) Get Local Business Involved, (3) Get Advice from Other Clubs, (4) Get a Manger Who's in the Know and (5) Get Former Players Involved. One club that comes to mind that has successfully followed this model are the San Antonio Scorpions FC. They are a team who will make their professional debut in 2012 when they play their first game for the North American Soccer League (NASL).I'm fully aware that I can go into detail and educate you how the Scorpions have implemented the five steps and have kept their fans engaged, but I won't. I want you to go to ...

New York Red Bulls vs Chicago Fire: Red Bulls Waste Opportunities in 2-2 Tie

Playing in front of a sellout crowd of 25,177 spectators at Red Bull Arena, the New York Red Bulls (6-6-13) needed to rally to tie the worst team in MLS, the Chicago Fire (2-7-14), 2-2 on Saturday night. The only people who has to be happy with tonight's Red Bulls 2-2 home tie with MLS's worst team in front of 25,177 fans are Lil Jimmy and anyone else who enjoys seeing the top two teams in draws (27 combined) battle it out to a draw.If a selected party from the Red Bulls should be commended for their efforts is the staff who handles the team's social media. For the second consecutive week, they've had to handle the responsibilities of patronizing their followers with the optimistic politically correct tweets and Facebook statuses.I would love to really know what's their opinion of Saturday night's contest. Imagine having to find the positives of a team that's won one game in their past 10 games and have accumulated a 1-4-5 record during that span.In a match brought to you by McDonald's (I'm serious), the Red Bulls continue to debunk the myth that they are contenders for the 2011 MLS Cup. Playing more like ...

New York Red Bulls Unmercifully Stampeded by Real Salt Lake in 3-0 Loss

With 10 games remaining in the 2011 Major League Soccer season, there is no evidence that the New York Red Bulls should be considered a serious contender for the 2011 MLS Cup.A week after the Red Bulls flew to England to win the Emirates Cup, a tournament as meaningless as last year's Walt Disney Pro Soccer Classic, the team played their first MLS match since July 23, 2011 when they tied FC Dallas 2-2 at Red Bull Arena.Competing Saturday night against Real Salt Lake on the road at Rio Tinto Stadium, the Red Bulls were simply embarrassed by the home team in a 3-0 loss. In a battle of Eastern and Western Conference foes, RSL demonstrated on Saturday night why they're the stingiest team in MLS.With their superb defense, Real Salt Lake has only allowed 16 goals all season. Desperately needing to end a two-game losing streak, Real Salt Lake dissected the Red Bulls defense as they produced goals from a set piece, a strike and a penalty kick.Nat Borchers opened the goal register for RSL when he accepted a corner kick from Kyle Beckerman with his head to slam the soccer ball past Red Bulls goalkeeper Frank Rost for ...

New York Red Bulls: South Ward to Protest Against Organization on Saturday

New York City - For the first half of Saturday's New York Red Bulls match against FC Dallas, Red Bull Arena will not have the ruckus that many are accustomed too as the South Ward has decided to watch the first half in silence. The South Ward which consists of the supporters clubs of the Viking Army, the Garden State Supporters (GSS) , and the Empire Supporters Club (ESC) are simply frustrated with some of the organization's recent decision. The Empire Supporters Club posted a letter explaining their decision this morning. It's mainly centered around the Red Bulls decisions regarding the team's recent United States Open Cup match against the Chicago Fire. To read the letter which was submitted to the New York Red Bulls: http://bit.ly/omaW4eJust to be clear, the South Ward protest isn't against the players, it's against the management. For Viking Army member Ralph "Chupi" Garcia, they're also protesting the recent dismissal of long-time New York Red Bulls Latino Communications Duo of Ernesto Motta and Roberto Sierra.A few days ago, Chupi reached out to me and informed me of the South Ward's decision to protest the first half of Saturday's match against FC Dallas. He also wanted to address the ...
